Major Earthquakes Hit Northern Malawi - December 2009

The first major quake (5.8 magnitude) hit the Karonga District on December 6th, 2009. One person was killed and hundreds injured.  It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

Then on December 20th at 1:19am, a larger quake (6.0 magnitude) hit,  killing at least two people, injuring hundreds and leaving thousands homeless.  On December 22nd, President Bingu Wa Mutharika declared Karonga a disaster zone.  The area is in need of massive aid, especially with shelter as many thousands of homes and schools are damaged and uninhabitable and this is the rainy season.
